DEEPi
A high performance, small, and ECONOMICAL family of tools for deep-sea exploration!
The patent pending DEEPi camera head is central to all DEEPi technology. It is a ~25 mm cube, operates up to 5500 m depth and is capable of recording HD video and 8-megapixel still images, making it the smallest form factor HD deep-sea camera system available. It is based on the Raspberry Pi family of single board computers.
In contrast to traditional units that are expensive, cumbersome, prone to damage, and almost exclusively fabricated as 1-atm pressure housings made of aluminum, stainless steel or titanium, combined with custom-made optical viewports, the DEEPi uses a photopolymer 3D-printed shell partially potted (filled with epoxy as a pressure housing). A flat, polished borosilicate glass disc serves as the optical viewport, protects the lens assembly from pressure and water intrusion, and provides for quick and easy access for lens focusing.
